G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero Season 1.1

Review by Michael Klein

G.I. Joe is here...on DVD!

Similar to the recent release of Transformers Season 1, Shout! Factory has brought another iconic cartoon series back to DVD. G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero Season 1.1 collects the first 22 episodes of the timeless animated adventures of the Joe team and their constant battle against the evil Cobra. This four-disc set features two cases with original artwork and a colorful slipcase. Included in the package are an episode guide and a sheet of temporary tattoos featuring the G.I. Joe and Cobra logos, and Arashikage clan tattoo.

The animated menus of the discs feature the memorable theme song of the series with clips of the show and schematics of vehicles and locations from the show. The individual episodes look fantastic, and the work that Shout! Factory put into the re-coloring and cleaning up the sound are very noticeable. The majority of the episodes in the set are spread among three five-episode story arcs that are some of the most memorable stories in the cartoon series as a whole. The M.A.S.S. Device, The Revenge of Cobra, and The Pyramid of Darkness introduced fans to many of the series' popular characters and paved the way for the future of G.I. Joe. The set also includes seven other standalone Joe stories as well.

What would a new release of a fan-favorite cartoon be without bonus features? The main feature is a 3-part conversation with G.I Joe writer Ron Friedman called "Looking Back". These interesting excerpts provide fans with Mr. Friedman's take on the premise of the series, development of characters, storytelling, and more. Also included are six "Knowing Is Half The Battle" PSAs, three archival Hasbro toy commercials, a Printable script for the episode "Jungle Trap", and the awesome 1963 Toy Fair Presentation that introduced the world to G.I. Joe.

Overall, G.I. Joe fans of all ages will love the presentation that one of the most beloved animated and well-known animated series of all time has been given. Fan should expect to see more volumes of the animated series coming very soon, but for those that can't wait, Shout! Factory is also offering the G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero The Complete Series Box Set with 17-discs featuring all 95 original episodes in a limited edition footlocker packaging available only at GIJoeCollectorsSet.com. G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero Season 1.1 is available now at your local retailer or direct from Shout! Factory at ShoutFactoryStore.com
