Clockspring is remembering his time in high school as the big kid. He played on the football team, he didn’t like it much, his parents supported him but they didn’t like it much either, so when he seriously injured to his leg, he was fine with it ending his playing days.
In the computer lab of the The Gemini, the GI Joe’s headquarters in a Las Vegas casino, Clockspring is looking at some random photo websites when Firewall confronts him. He immediately begins defending his unofficial work, Firewall is more concerned with his ability to handle working with very dangerous people. He doesn’t give a very convincing answer and Firewall storms out telling him to work on his confidence.
Back in the hospital recovering from his surgeries on his leg, Cate Aiken the football teams cheer captain to assigned to assist him. She spent hours with him and he was happiest he had ever been. He noticed her bruises from the abuse at home and she felt safe with him. Weeks later when he was out the hospital but still on crutches, he went to meet her and saw her kissing another guy.

Clockspring is passing Lady Jaye in the hallway as she makes a joke about his recently shaved head, he takes it seriously. Lady Jaye is dumbfounded that he takes it so seriously and rushes off telling him to lighten up and be more of a team member.
After his heartbreak with Cate, he turned to his computer for escape. After creating some navigation software for the car companies, he got accepted to Carnegie Mellon, his parents were so proud of him. At college, he got to hang out with the cool kids that spent their time hacking, it appealed to him but he didn’t fit in. He meets Holly a troubled girl at his local diner, he starts teaching her about computers but she chooses some loser guy over him.

Sitting at his computer Clockspring, Tomax enters to talk to him, doing both at the same time he complements and points out Clockspring’s weaknesses. He points out that the warriors walking around appreciate him but they don’t respect him. He also starts telling him about the captured Night Creeper, Bet. He suggests that a person with Clockspring’s computer knowledge should get to know him since he dismantles million dollar security systems for fun.
Back in college, as he was working online, he is contacted by what he thought was the NSA and after 36 hours of computer hacking, he discovered a location, time and date of a meeting. And he was recruited by Duke and Firewall. He joined the Joe team and was part of the computer science team working in The Pit until they shipped him off join Flint’s team. And that is where he met and started working with Erika Le Tene, aka Chameleon.
Clockspring cares for Chameleon, he feels like they are very similar, he understands her and that he can help her. He has seen Flint and Chameleon together through the security cameras. And he decides that in order win Chameleon he has to change up his pattern. He heads down to the detention level to interview the Night Creeper.
