Erika Le Tene having fled the high ranking Cobra meeting because of a tip from Xamot that she was to be killed has been captured by Chameleon. She is currently being held at sword point. Erika determines that Chameleon is GI Joe and she tells her that a team of Cobra Vipers are headed out to kill Chuckles at his campground.
Meanwhile out in the jungle, the 6 man Viper team has arrived at Chuckles small campground. They divide into groups of two to search for him. One group of two is killed by a claymore mine, then Chuckles comes flying out of a tree stabbing a Viper in the back of the head. Now using that dead Viper's body as cover he begins firing at the other ones. He kills two more but is shot in the shoulder. With his gun empty, he drops the dead body as cover, runs into the jungle, he swings around behind the last two remaining Vipers. He breaks his rifle over the head of one as the other attacks. A fist fight begins, Chuckles is punched in the nose, punched in the gut, then the Viper sticks his finger in the bullet wound of his shoulder and finally he is shot in his gut. But he is still alive and on his knees as the Viper points the gun at his head. The next thing Chuckles sees is the Viper's head rolling on the ground right next to him. Chameleon cuts off his head saving his life.
Chameleon has left Erika tied to a tree, where Max, Chuckles' helper and Crystal Ball's son, finds her. She figures out quickly that Max has been helping Chuckles and asks him to take her to him.
Chameleon has field dressed Chuckles still bleeding wounds. She tells him he needs to get to a hospital right away otherwise he won't survive. Erika & Max arrive where she announces that she is defecting and willing to give up any information she has regarding Cobra in exchange for asylum. Chuckles order Chameleon to kill Erika but she doesn't. Erika insists that she is defecting and not surrendering. Max standing behind Erika says "I feel weird" as he holds his head.
Chuckles and Erika begin arguing about the capture and death of Jinx. When Chameleon notices Max pull a gun from the dead Viper and attempt to shoot Erika in the back. Without thinking she just cuts Max's throat killing him, his last words are "Dad, I can't hear you. It's dark."
Chuckles picks up the Viper's guns and begins to walk away, he is still bleeding. Chameleon is forced to make a decision take Erika prisoner and get her back to GI Joe or complete her mission which is to bring Chuckles back to GI Joe. She makes her decision and watches the gravely wounded Chuckles walk off in the jungle.
Sitting in a containment cell talking to a speaking box that is talking back, Erika is telling her story. She starts with when she first met Chuckles, 18 months ago, after she had been assigned by Tomax & Xamot to oversee the bail out of the destroyed treasuries. (see Cobra #?) After sleeping together, she discovered the skeletal resonance transmissions which was how at the time Chuckles was communicating with Hawk. She alerted Tomax & Xamot and they began monitoring him, they broke the code after a week. After determining what agency Chuckles was with they began feeding him misinformation with the intention of using the destruction of the facilities as a cover escape, leading GI Joe to believe that Cobra had been destroyed (See Cobra #4). Once the brothers were aware of Jinx as Chuckles handler, they captured her to play a game with Chuckles, basically to see what he is made of. When he executed her they were surprised. And then continued the game.
She then is requested to explain the events in the jungle. She was saved by Xamot, who she believes to be insane or at the minimum erratic, when he warned her of the Viper team attack on Chuckles which she was supposed to lead and of the orders of the Viper team were to kill her after dealing with Chuckles. But she avoided leading the mission and escaped. She believed Xamot because she knew her death was coming and its was her one chance to escape. So she took it.
In regards to Max, she believes that his father, Crystal Ball, the master hypnotists, brainwashed him and sent him to his death by helping Chuckles. Erika insists that she has defected and would like to work for them. But the voice talking to her reminds her that she is now a prisoner with no privileges.
In the adjacent room, Hawk is the voice talking to Erika and Chameleon is varifing everything Erika has said as truth. Hawk then asks her why she made the decision to let her mission walk away into the jungle. She believed that the healthy and willing Erika was a better source of information on Cobra then the injured and uncooperative Chuckles. Hawk agrees her choice was acceptable and dismisses her. Chameleon then requests that Chuckles, who is most certainly dead, get a commendation. Hawk denies her request saying "This is GI Joe. We don't do commendations and if we did we wouldn't for him. He was insubordinate in direct violation of his orders." Then he dismisses her again.
After brief pause, Chameleon begins yelling at Hawk, telling him that Chuckles gave everything including his humanity to serve his country and to serve him. Chuckles killed the woman he loved, Jinx, for the mission because he was told by Hawk that nothing was more important. She accuses him of using Chuckles just like Crystal Ball used his own son. She says "I thank God in heaven Cobra exists for you to fight and you them. Because God help the world if either one of you is ever turned loose on it." "This isn't my military. You aren't soldiers and I don't want anything to do with GI Joe ever again."
She just stands there looking at Hawk with tears in her eyes. Hawk obviously thinking about her words, accepts her resignation and dismisses her again. This time she goes. Hawk left sitting in his room alone, closes his eyes.
In the jungle, a severely bleeding Chuckles collapses to ground and passes out.
Much later he wakes up, strapped to a bed with medical equipment around him. He hears a voice talking to him about what happened after he passed out. The voice is very impressed by how remarkable he is and says "I wanted to see you myself. To assure you you're among friends". Chuckles looks up to see Cobra Commander himself standing in front of him, both Tomax & Xamot are standing at his sides with Crystal Ball sitting in a chair. He has accomplished his mission.
