Comandos Heroicos
In Mexico, GI Joe was sold as Comandos Heroicos. Published by Vid Editorial in Spanish for distribution in Mexico, however, a few issues were marked for sale in other countries (but rarely found there). They were published mostly bi-weekly starting in 1988 and lasting until 1993 running for a 101 issues. This was by far the largest amount of issues released in any foreign language.
This series released issues that covered stories from the main GI Joe series as well as GI Joe Special Missions and GI Joe and the Transformers.
Throughout the years, the comics went through several changes including the physical size, page count, titling and release but all still continuing the same numbering system.
Here is a breakdown of the changes.
Issues #1-39 are the regular digest sized comics measuring 5 1/2" w by 7 3/4" h.
An exception was for issues #21-22, which decreased in size & increadsed in page count, containing an issue and a half of the US versions.
They were released bi-weekly from 7/11/88 until 9/4/91 (Issues #1-83).
Starting with #36 until #71 the price is listed on the cover for Mexico, Puerto Rico, Costa Rica, Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador
Issues #40-85 were a smaller digest size of 5" w by 6 3/4" h. Each issue went from 32 pages to 48 pages containing roughly an issue and a half of the US versions. Size Comparison Photo
By issue #64, "GI Joe" became the title headline, replacing "Comandos Heroicos".
Issue #83's cover is unique and exclusive to these comics released in Mexico.
Issue #84 did not appear for more than 2 months (11/11/91).
The following month brought issue #85 on 12/9/91, the last of the small digest size.
Issues #86-101, were back to being the regular digest 5 1/2" X 7 3/4" size.
Starting on 12/16/91, the comic was released weekly in the larger digest format until 3/2/92. (Issues #86-97).
A long pause of almost 8 months before issue #98 came forth on 11/6/92 and again back to the smaller digest size of 5" w by 6 3/4" h but with only 32 pages.
Issue #99 came on 12/4/92, #100 on 1/1/93 and the final issue #101 on 1/29/93.
