Series: Five (1986)
Serpentor was first available as part of the fifth series (1986), packaged exclusively with the Air Chariot. He was also sold in 1987, then was discontinued domestically in 1988.
He was also available in 1990, 1992, and 1993 as a mail-in offer from Hasbro Direct.
Serpentor came with a gold snake headdress worn as a backpack, a green cape, a silver dagger, and a gold pet cobra.
The cobra sometimes came in other colors [See VARIATIONS below]. In addition, some mail-in versions of Serpentor did not come with a cape.
A secret cabal of Cobra scientists, under the direction of The Interrogator and Destro, combed the tombs, sarcophagi and relics of the great despots of history to find cells with DNA traces. From these long-dead genetic blueprints they produced a composite clone with the military genius of Napoleon, the ruthlessness of Julius Caesar, the daring of Hannibal, and the fiscal acumen of Attila the Hun...the ultimate Cobra Emperor! A master of political intrigue and a brilliant tactician, he is capable of wresting power from Cobra Commander for the benefit of The Interrogator and Desto. Fortunately for the Joes, the Cobra Emperor's own ambitions were not taken into consideration by his creators...
"His eyes have seen the legions of Rome trample the Gauls and Nervii into the dust. His hand lifted the horse-hair baton that signaled the first charge of the Carthaginian armored elephant phalanx. His ears have heard the rattle of French cuirassiers on the streets of Moscow. But it is his mind we must fear the most. The thoughts of the Cobra Emperor have not drifted from global conquest since the reign of King Soloman..."
Some versions of Serpentor came with differently colored snakes. Pictured below are various versions of the snakes - opaque gold, translucent brown, translucent green, and mixtures of all three colors. The most common version is the gold snake pictured at the far left.
It should also be noted that the versions that are more brown in color are also more transparent and have less of a metallic look to them. At the same time, several samples that at first appear to be mostly brown appear to be more green when held up to a light.
Some Serpentors came with painted yellow necks, while others did not.
The mail-in version of Serpentor has several differences. The most notable of those differences are the date stamp (MADE IN CHINA as opposed to the retail version's more common MADE IN HONG KONG), the separated chin, and the curled chest tails pictured below. Additionally, the yellow paint used is a lighter shade than on the retail release. Be aware that the gold plastic used in these mail-in versions has become extremely brittle with age and can very easily break.
In addition, some mail-in versions of Serpentor came with multiple daggers but no cape.
Serpentor's body is completely original - all new body parts.
The entire mold was re-used in 2002 to create Serpentor (v2).
