The general is a West Point graduate with a list of special education credits as long as his arm, but he acquired the main body of his experience where it counts - on the battlefield. He's the type of commander who goes out and gets shot at like everyone else. Troops respect that. They know he won't ask them to do anything he isn't willing to do himself. That's why they're willing to do anything he tells them.
Variations
When General Clayton "Hawk" Abernathy was reissued for the 50th Anniversary release in 2014, several small variations were created. The 50th Anniversary release has a slightly paler flesh tone and a gold star on the left shoulder. Additionally, the goggles were retooled with a thinner band that rests lower on his helmet and were painted in a darker shade of black. Finally, gold paint was added to his stand.
Body Construction
General Clayton "Hawk" Abernathy (version 6) was created using the head of G.I. Joe Hawk (v3) (2008), the torso and waist of Duke (v30) (2009), the arms of Dusty (v14) (2010), and the legs of Recondo (v7) (2010).
Versions of Hawk
In 1991 Hawk was renamed "General Hawk," in 2000 renamed "General Tomahawk," in 2004 renamed "General Abernathy," and in 2008 renamed "G.I. Joe Hawk." So while there are several names, they are all based on the character "Hawk."
