Series: Three (1984)
The Slugger [Self Propelled Cannon] was first released boxed in U.S. toy stores in 1984. It included the driver, Thunder. The Slugger was also sold in 1985 and was discontinued in 1986.
The Slugger (without driver) was later available in 1987-1991 as a Mail-In Premium Offer. Around 1991, the mail-order Slugger started appearing without the camouflage paint pattern.
Driver/Pilot: THUNDER (v1)
Thunder was released as part of the third series (1984), packaged exclusively with the Self Propelled Cannon (Slugger) tank. He was also sold in 1985, then was discontinued domestically in 1986.
In 1987, Thunder was available mail-order from Hasbro Direct as part of a six figure vehicle drivers set that included Copperhead, HISS Driver, Stinger Driver, Crankcase, and Frostbite. He was later available as part of the "Special Missions Drivers" set with Ace, Admiral Keel-Haul, Lampreys, Strato-Viper, and Motor Viper.
Easily Broken/Lost Pieces
The machine gun is small and easily lost.
The retail version of the Slugger featured a darker green camouflage paint pattern. The mail-order version was all-green and did not have the paint pattern. Additionally, the mail-in instructions contains an extra blurb about Thunder.
In Brazil, the Slugger was sold without Thunder as the Artilharia Pesada.
