The Special Missions series written by Larry Hama started in October 1986 and was published bi-monthly for a while, but later
was published monthly. It featured stand alone missions mostly seperate from the main series. It ended in November of 1989.
The series had a lead-in story from issue #50
of the main series.

G.I. Joe Special Mission Trade Paperback
In 1988, the first four Special Missions stories were reprinted in a trade paperback. It also contained the story from issue #50 as well.
