IDW Publishing

IDW, or Idea + Design Works, picked up the G.I. Joe comics license in late 2008, and redefined the G.I. Joe comics experience. With a wholly new continuity and a darker, more realistic tone, IDW offered a more mature take on the familiar setting. Though IDW was not without its sense of tradition, creating their own continuation of the Marvel series with Larry Hama once more penning the tales.

G.I. Joe

Beginning in January 2009, IDW created a brand new continuity. This is the main series and simply titled G.I. Joe (with no subtitle), written by Chuck Dixon. Now considered Volume/Season 1 it ran for 28 issues + 1 Special.

G.I. Joe Season 2

Starting April 2011, G.I. Joe Season 2 becomes the Main Series with a new #1 issue and still written by Chuck Dixon. And is considered Volume/Season 2. In January of 2012 the subtitle of Cobra Command substituted for Cobra Civil War.

G.I. Joe: Cobra

The G.I. Joe: Cobra series, following the same new continuity, started in March 2009 titled GI Joe: Cobra, this is a 4 part mini-series written by Christos Gage & Mike Costa, followed by a unique Special and then a sequel series called Cobra II. Starting in July of 2010 the Cobra series became monthly starting with #5 & finishes with #13. (The title reverted back to just Cobra.)

G.I. Joe Cobra Vol. 2

In April 2011, Cobra: G.I. Joe Cobra Vol. 2 began as a separate series that follows the contest within Cobra to become the next Cobra Commander. It is written by Mike Costa. In January of 2012 the subtitle of Cobra Command substituted for Cobra Civil War.

Snake Eyes

Also starting April 2011, Snake Eyes gets his own solo series that is still connected to the Cobra Civil War. It is also written by Chuck Dixon. In January of 2012 the subtitle of Cobra Command substituted for Cobra Civil War.

Released in February 2009, IDW began GI Joe: Origins which is the same continuity, this series has revolving writers which includes Larry Hama & Chuck Dixon. This series lasted for 23 issues.

Starting in May of 2010, NY Times Bestselling writer Max Brooks writes G.I. Joe Hearts & Minds which is a 5 issue mini series about the Joe & Cobra characters personal perspective on themselves and what they do for their organizations. A day in the life kind of story.

Staring with a Free Comic Book Day book in May of 2010, IDW with Larry Hama as the writer picks up Marvel's A Real American Hero story line where it finished back in 1995. This new series starts with issue #155 1/2.

Classic G.I.Joe: A Real American Hero (Reprints)

IDW is releasing reprints of the original Marvel comics in Trade Paperback form. Titled Classic GI Joe. The Classic TPBs past #5 (Marvel issues #50) and the Special Missions series are reprinted in TPB format for the first time with IDW. An additional series of IDW reprints of Marvel TPB's are released in the Best of Series.

This four issue Prequel monthly mini-series written by Chuck Dixon was released in 2009 (Mar to Jun) prior to the GI Joe: Rise of Cobra Movie premiere. Each issue spotlighted an individual character and their activities before the events of the movie, several story lines are then picked up in the movie.

This four issue mini-series is the official Movie Adaptation comic of the GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra movie. This series was released weekly in July with one issue coming out per week up to the release of the movie on August 7th, 2009. Written by Denton Tipton.

Disavowed

In June 2010, IDW began releasing the Devil's Due Publishing created stories in trade paperback form as the "Disavowed" Alternative Universe. These are direct reprints of the DDP TPB's.

Future Noir Series

IDW's Future Noir Series is a full size comic but drawn in black & white and written in Manga style. The stories are written by Andy Schmidt with a fantasy/sci-fi angle and are completely different than any other type of GI Joe story.

Infestation

In 2011 IDW began Infestation which is a crossover series between several of IDW's titles including GI Joe, Transformers, Ghostbusters and Star Trek but it is only with the theme of fighting zombies. No actual crossover of characters. In 2012, Infestation 2 was released as a sequel series similar in idea but different story.
