G.I.Joe Cartoon

Animation was a huge part of the G.I.Joe experience.

The very first G.I.Joe animation was seen in the 1982 television commercial for Marvel Comics' G.I.Joe #1. Sunbow Productions produced all of the G.I.Joe animation between 1982 and 1988.

In 1983, Sunbow produced the five-part G.I.Joe syndicated television mini-series, The M.A.S.S. Device. In 1984, it was followed up by The Revenge of Cobra mini-series. In 1985, The Pyramid of Darkness launched the daily cartoon that ran for two seasons. Sunbow concluded their run of G.I.Joe animation with G.I.Joe : The Movie in 1987.

In 1989, another fledgling animation studio, DIC Animation, animated the further cartoon adventures of G.I.Joe with their mini-series Operation: Dragonfire. DIC also animated two seasons of cartoons in 1990 and 1991. However, DIC operated on a much lower budget and the results were of a much lower standard of quality than the Sunbow cartoons.

The first clip below is of him as Cutter - which is probably the most like his natural voice - then as Firefly. The second clip below is of him as Spirit. The third clip below is him as Firefly introducing YoJoe.com.

A few of the many characters Gregg Berger has voiced include Cornfed from Duckman, Grimlock from The Transformers, and Odie from Garfield.

Thanks to Gregg Berger for graciously lending his voice to YoJoe.com.

    Neil Ross

Neil Ross was the voice of several characters in the Sunbow G.I.Joe cartoons, including Buzzer and Monkeywrench.

This clip is of him explaining his most famous G.I.Joe character, Shipwreck.

Ross has lent his voice to many cartoons, including Voltron, the Transformers, and the Centurions.

    Destro's Subliminal Message

In the G.I.Joe episode Sins of Our Fathers, Cobra Commander evokes a monster that dwelled in the ruins beneath Destro's ancestral home. Destro and G.I.Joe team-up and Destro uses an ancient chant to lure the monster away. Destro is voiced by actor Arthur Burghardt, Dialtone is voiced by Hank Garrett.

One of the scares of the 1980s was the "subliminal message" scare - where individuals were convinced that there were occult messages hidden in rock music, commercials, etc. Even cartoons. This subliminal message can be found when listening to Destro's chant backwards.
