Unproduced Dial Tone, Pathfinder & Outback

In 1998 there were plans to release a G.I. Joe Headquarters playset repainted in desert colors with a pair of figures; the set was scheduled to include Outback and Pathfinder with Dial-Tone being a late addition raising the figure count to three. Prohibitive costs kept this set from seeing a retail release, but a few figure samples have surfaced over the years showing what was planned and the level of detail that was going to be put into the set.

Pictured above are the three prototype repaints that were scheduled to be included with the set. The paint scheme is production level with tampo applications and is not hand painted indicating that these figures - and the set as a whole - were very close to full production. These figures were to be included with a repainted version of the 1983 G.I.JOE HEADQUARTERS. There was discussion of other headquarters playsets being used to help offset production costs of the planned set, but ultimately nothing came from this and the Headquarters set in its entirety was, unfortunately, cancelled.

At present the number of known samples of these figures remains at under 5 of each. No samples of the HQ painted in the desert camo scheme are known to exist. If anyone has any further information about these figures or about the unproduced Headquarters please contact us.
