Lamprey was first released as part of the fourth series (1985) packaged exclusively with the Cobra Moray Hydrofoil. He was also sold in 1986. In 1987, Lamprey and the Cobra Moray Hydrofoil were discontinued.
In 1989, he was available mail-order as part of the "Special Missions Drivers" set with Ace, Thunder, Keel-Haul, Strato-Viper, and Motor Viper.

Body Construction
Lamprey's body is completely original - all new body parts.
Lamprey's entire body and mold were re-used for the Sonic Fighters Lampreys (v2) (1990), Lampreys (v3) (2000), and Lamprey (v4) (2003).
Starting with this series (Series Four, 1985), the head joint on G.I.Joe figures was changed into a head "ball." This ball allowed the head to look up and down, in addition to left and right.
