Code Name:

Keel Haul

Desimone Guide: #89

Tomart's Guide: #GI5441b

Keel Haul's Filecard

Figure Description:

Keel Haul was released as part of the fourth series (1985), packaged exclusively with the U.S.S. Flagg aircraft carrier. He was also sold in 1986, then was discontinued domestically in 1987.

In 1989, he was available mail-order as part of the "Special Missions Drivers" set with Ace, Thunder, Lampreys, Strato-Viper, and Motor Viper.

Left-over bagged Keel-Haul figures were eventually released through some strange channels and ended up as prizes at Chuck E. Cheese pizza/arcades and carnivals around the country as "Skeeball" prizes in 1993.

This action figure is often referred to as "Admiral Keel Haul".

Versions of Keel Haul:

Accessories:

Keel Haul came with a silver handgun. Some later editions of Keel Haul did not come with the handgun.

The same handgun was recolored black and packaged with Hawk (v2).

Variations:

There are two versions of Keel-Haul - with and without the patch on his right arm. The 1985 edition of Keel-Haul came with the patch, but the 1989 mail-in version did not. However, later versions of the mail-in Keel-Haul had the patch again. In addition to missing the patch, the variant Keel-Hauls do not have the stars painted on the figure's collar.

Also, some of the later mail-in versions of Keel-Haul did not come with the handgun.

Body Construction:

Keel Haul's body mold is entirely original and not made up from previous molds.

The mold was re-used in 1993 to create the figure Keel Haul (v2). The waistpiece was re-used in 1991 to create Major Altitude.

Starting with this series (Series Four, 1985), the head joint on G.I.Joe figures was changed into a head "ball". This ball allowed the head to look up and down, in addition to left and right.
